Species information

Caroline Narayan

Today, the range of tree species and cultivars exceeds 6000 in Europe. One problem in defining how many species and cultivars there are is that the term tree is a vague one. However, in the Global Forest Resources Assessment a tree is defined as: a woody perennial with a single main stem, or in the case of coppice with several stems, having a more or less definite crown. The definition includes bamboos, palms, and other woody plants meeting the above criterion. (FAO 2001. Global Forest Resources Assessment FRA 2000 – Main report).

European tree flora is diverse and rich thanks to the combination of a wide range of ecological and climatic conditions. Throughout the centuries, many exotic tree species have been introduced into silviculture and horticulture. Some exotic tree species are widely cultivated.

This section contains sources of information of variable type about tree species grown in Europe. Sources of information include: images, models, descriptions of endangered species, and species related research.
