Regional processes

Jani Niemenmaa

National forest policies in European countries are increasingly influenced by international affairs. The regional issues, such as Natura2000 and agricultural policy in the EU, and various internationally adopted conventions and resolutions also affect forest policies on the national level. Moreover, there have been more public demands for more ecologically sound forestry to move towards the development of sustainable forestry on a European and global scale.

There have been major political, social and economic changes in the former socialist countries in Europe. After these changes, there has been intensive development in all fields of economy and economic co-operation. These changes have also had an influence on forestry and forest policy.
