Certification

Rutger Dankers

Forest certification is a system of forest inspection plus a means of tracking timber and paper from inspected forests through a "chain of custody" - following the raw material through to the finished product. The essential components for forest certification are requirements for forest management, and use and chain of custody verification as well as the qualification criteria for external auditing.

Timber certification is a process for labelling wood from certified forests. It is designed to send a market signal to buyers that the products they purchase are derived from forests that are managed to particular environmental and social standards.

The concept of certification is closely linked to the concept of C&I (criteria and indicators) for sustainable forest management (SFM), in that sets of C&I can be used as a basis for developing certification standards.

Some 32 certification systems (global, regional or national) were in use in 2002 in Europe. The most common systems used in Europe were those of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC).
