The term biodiversity is a shortening of the phrase biological diversity. The following definition was adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD): Biological diversity means the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. [source: Convention on biological diversity (with annexes). Concluded at Rio de Janeiro on 5 June 1992].

There is a general consensus that as pressures on natural resources increase, that biodiversity is being lost, and that the rate of loss is not sustainable. Maintaining biodiversity is believed to promote stability, sustainability and resilience of ecosystems. In April 2002, the Parties to the CBD committed themselves to achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national level as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on Earth. This target was subsequently endorsed by the World Summit on Sustainable Development and the United Nations General Assembly and was incorporated as a new target under the Millennium Development Goals.
