Climate change

Rutger Dankers

The fourth IPCC assessment report on climate change - The physical science basis - makes it clear that the earth's climate is changing and that man's activities play a part. "Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations."

The effects of global warming on forests and forestry everywhere are varied and far-reaching. Increases in preceipitation, temperature and solar radiation not only affect forest ecosystems directly, but also modify the responses of trees to air pollution, disease and other stresses. The flooding and drought that result from climate change can also severely affect forestry operations and may lead to permanent changes in land use.

Throughout Europe, the effects of climate and climate change on forests is being monitored and much of this data is brought together by the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE) in their State of Europe's forests report.
