Gerald J. Lenhard
Wildland fires cause serious damage to the forest areas of Europe every year. They also affect people and their properties. In the Mediterranean countries fire has been a natural element of forests, largely determining its species composition and landscape structure, but at the same time it is the most significant hazard to forests and increasingly a risk to people and settlements. Fire management and protection is currently also a topic of active research.
