Wood science / technology

Veikko Moettoenen

Wood science is the study of wood as a material that is renewable and of biological origin. How man uses that material and the processes and tools he utilises are defined as wood technology. Many academic institutions offer courses and conduct research that is not industry-related and in fact is often closer to pure science than applied science. They treat wood as a material, often in direct comparison with other materials in terms of their properties, performance, workability and value.

Wood based materials have certain advantages over competitive industrial materials:

1. They are based on renewable resources

2. A portion of the harvested material is able to be used as a source of energy to produce the product

3. Wood is a versatile material

Wood science looks at these advantages and takes a closer look at wood.
