North Karelia lives off the forest. This sector is the most important provider of export income in the region. A rich combination of forest resources, forest industries and forestry know-how in the region has led to the unofficial recognition that North Karelia is the "Region of Forests in Europe".
North Karelia differs from the other provinces of Finland due to its high concentration of forest know-how. Education is given at many levels, from harvester drivers to masters and doctors of forestry science. The research and educational organizations of the province invest especially in the development of the fields of forest technology, bioenergy and wood processing.
The nearness of forests and the cooperation of the forest and forestry-based economy companies with the research and educational units offer good possibilities to new projects that support the economic life of the province and also the whole of Finland.
