The North Karelians are active berry and mushroom pickers. According to a research made by the University of Joensuu, 83 % of the households of the province picked berries and 58 % picked mushrooms in 1997. The most important berries commercially and for home use are blueberry, lingonberry, cloudberry
and raspberry. In addition, cranberries, crowberries, whortleberries, arctic bramble and rowanberries are colleted. In 1997 nearly 3 million kilograms of berries were gathered (40 kg/household). In North Karelia, the amount of picked berries per household is nearly double the national average.
Other forest and timber ralated business contains e.g. commercial seedling producers, and production of high-quality birch sap.
