DescriptionThe Slovenian Forestry Institute (SFI) is a national research organisation of national importance in the field of forests and forested landscapes, forestry, wildlife management and hunting. Its main role as a public institution is performed as part of the National Research Programme and the National Forest Development Programme. Within its field it directs and gives expert supervision to the monitoring of degradation and damage to forests; to a reporting, prognostic-diagnostic service for forests, forestry seeding and nursery activities; to an information system for forests and to preparations for setting up an expert basis and norms for the performance of forestry work. SFI issues certificates for forest seeds and saplings in accordance with the regulations on seeds and saplings, carries out expert work and sanitary supervision over forestry seeding and nursery activities and performs statistical research programmes on forests. The sharing of knowledge within JGS tasks also includes cooperation with the Slovenian Forest Service in the form of topical workshops. The research work of the institute includes projects within ten scientific research departments (Forest Ecology, Forest Physiology and Genetics, Forest Protection, Ecology of Forest Fauna and Hunting, Forest Techniques and Economics, Wood and Wood Quality, Silviculture, Forest Growth and Increment with Dendrochronology, Forest and Landscape Management, Forestry Information Systems and Remote Sensing). SFI provides research and development services to the Slovenian State Forest Service.
