DescriptionThe French National Forest Inventory (IFN) was created in 1958 to assess French forest resources. It carries out a permanent inventory of national forest resources, independently of all ownership issues. In 1994, the IFN was turned into a public institution supervised by the minister in charge of the forests. Inventory operations are achieved département by département on a 12-year rotational period. A forest map of each département is drawn up using aerial photographs. Statistical data is collected by sampling through photo-interpretation and field operations. Dendrometric, ecological and floristic information as well as digital cartography are recorded in public databases. IFN publishes principal inventory results on its website and in papers. It also compiles forest maps. Some of the inventory results are available (in French and English). Some of the information requires registration (available in French - January 2007). Some of the other products and services are available for purchase.
