DescriptionECOFOR is a public organisation created as a tool for cooperation between ten French institutions with an interest in forest research. ECOFOR implements programmes under research agreements with the laboratories of member organizations or third parties. Its aim is to create conditions for investment in medium and long-term research on the functioning of forest ecosystems, in order to propose scientifically based solutions to forest managers concerning the future of forest ecosystems. Its specific objectives include: (1) promotion of meaningful and coordinated development work on fundamental and applied research devoted to an awareness of temperate, Mediterranean and tropical forest ecosystems, their functioning and their evolution or transformation under the influence of natural and human influences; (2) formation of a structure for negotiation, concerned elaboration, monitoring and evaluation of federative and original research programmes; (3) establishment/development of experimental facilities of common interest, required to implement cooperative research programmes. The ten members are: Irstea; CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique); CIRAD (Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement est un organisme scientifique spécialisé en agriculture des régions tropicales et subtropicales); AgroParisTech; CNPF (Forêt Privée Française / Centre national de la propriété forestière); FCBA - l'Institut Technologique Forêt Cellulose Bois-construction Ameublement; IGN (Institut national de l’information géographique et forestière); INRA (Institut national de la recherche agronomique); IRD (Institut de recherche pour le développement); and ONF (Office national des forêts).
