DescriptionForestBIOTA was a forest biodiversity monitoring project (2005-2006) for European countries. It aimed at the further development of monitoring methods for some aspects of forest biodiversity as well as towards correlative studies between some compositional, structural and functional indices of forest biodiversity. It is based on more than 100 already existing intensive monitoring plots of the EU and ICP Forests monitoring programme with well established infrastructure and database. Harmonized methods for the assessment of (i) stand structure (ii) deadwood (iii) epiphytic lichens (iv) ground vegetation and (v) forest classification have been developed, and the reports are available. The project was co-financed by the European Commission under the 'Forest Focus' scheme.
