DescriptionBMEL is responsible for the development of forest policy and forest legislation at the Federal level. Reports available from the BMEL website include: annual Forest Condition Reports for Germany (2003 onwards); Report on the Implementation of the Strategy on Forestry and Biological Diversity; National Forest Programme Germany. BMEL also publish the results of the German national forest inventory (Bundeswaldinventur). From 1 January 2008, seven federal research institutes of the research division of BMEL were merged to form four new federal research institutes: Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute - Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries (VTI); Julius Kühn Institute - Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants (JKI); Max Rubner-Institute - Federal Research Institute for Nutrition and Food (MRI); Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute - Federal Research Institute for Animal Health (FLI).
