DescriptionThe Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems (ITES) is an internationally focussed research unit that develops and disseminates new knowledge, methods and tools to foster the sustainable use and adaptive management of terrestrial ecosystems and the goods and services they provide. ITES aims to deliver high quality research and education that emphasises the ecology and management of human-dominated landscapes. Specifically, it aims to: Understand community and ecosystem processes and their interactions across different scales in time and space; Develop and evaluate management strategies to adapt ecosystem development and use under conditions of environmental and social change; Link system knowledge with target and transformation knowledge aiming to contribute to an efficient, environmentally sound, and institutionally acceptable provision of ecosystem goods and services; Attract highly motivated students and provide them with the skills and knowledge for academic or professional careers in ecological and natural resource management. ITES was founded on 1 July 2006 by former members of the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (ITÖ) and the Department of Forest Sciences (FOWI) at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich.
