DescriptionThe Atlantic European Regional Office of the European Forest Institute – EFIATLANTIC – covers Europe's Atlantic rim region, and is located in Bordeaux, France. It is the follow up of the former EFI Project Centre Institut Européen des Forêts Cultivées (IEFC). EFIATLANTIC was launched in Spring 2009. EFIATLANTIC particularly works to promote the sustainable management and competitive utilization of planted forests. EFIATLANTIC focuses on the sustainable management and competitive utilization of forests in a diverse geographical region stretching along Europe's Atlantic rim from Southern Portugal to Northern Scotland. The temperate forests of this region are characterized by: Oceanic climates; Fast-growing tree species and plantations; Increasing population and human impact on the environment; Exposure to significant natural hazards including storms, fires, pests and pathogens; Importance as a source of wood and fibre for industry; High level of private forest ownership; Integrative forest management for rural development and amenities.
