DescriptionComprising an area of roughly 20 million hectares, municipality and local community-owned forest is the third significant kind of forest ownership in Europe, along with state- and privately-owned forests. The European Federation of Municipal and Local Community Forests (FECOF) is the European umbrella organization for these community- owned forests. It was founded in 1990 during a time of growing concern about forest politics at the European Union level. The founding members of FECOF were the French organization for community forest ownership FNCOFOR (Forêts Nationales - Communes Forestières de la France) as well as the joint forestry committee of the three central German municipal organizations: the German Association for Cities and Towns (Deutscher Städtetag), the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (Deutscher Städteund Gemeindebund) and the German County Association (deutscher Landkreistag). FECOF is currently comprised of national sections in France, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Spain and Andorra.
