DescriptionThe Birds Directive (Directive 2009/147/EC) was adopted in 2009. It replaces Council Directive 79/409/EEC from 1979 on the conservation of wild birds, and together the directives represent the oldest and most important pieces of nature legislation in the European Union. The Directive aims to protect all European wild birds and the habitats of listed species, in particular through the designation of Special Protection Areas (SPAs). The Birds Directive together with the Habitats Directive are the legal basis for Natura 2000 network (a network of 26000 sites with an area of more than 750000 km2).
