DescriptionForest Focus was a Community scheme (running from 2003 to 2007) for harmonised, broad-based, comprehensive and long-term monitoring of European forest ecosystems. It concentrated in particular on protecting forests against air pollution and fire. To supplement the monitoring system, instruments relating to soil monitoring, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, climate change and protective functions of forests were developed. Regulation (EC) No 2152/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 November 2003 concerning monitoring of forests and environmental interactions in the Community (Forest Focus). The Regulation establishing Forest Focus sought to implement forest monitoring and protection activities, in particular in the following areas: (a) protection against atmospheric pollution; (b) prevention of fires and their causes and effects; (c) biodiversity, climate change, carbon sequestration, soils and protective functions of forests; (d) continuous evaluation of monitoring activities. Forest Focus provided for measures to: (a) promote harmonised collection, handling and assessment of data; (b) improve data evaluation at Community level; (c) improve the quality of data and information gathered; (d) develop forest monitoring activities; (e) enhance the understanding of forests; study forest fires; (f) develop indicators and methodologies for risk assessment.
