DescriptionThe Research Unit for timber production outside forest (formerly the Istituto di Sperimentazione per la Pioppicoltura - ISP; Poplar Research Institute) carries out its research activities on poplar and willow. The research is particularly aimed at developing new poplar clones with particular qualities such as rapid growth, disease resistance, production of high quality wood, and adaption to different soil conditions. Techniques for intensive cultivation are investigated, in traditional plantations for biomass, as well as extensive or semi-extensive forestry models which respond better to the requirements of ecologically sustainable arboriculture. The unit is structured into the following research groups: Breeding and biodiversity; Biotechnology; Biology and entomology; Plant diseases and pest control; Arboriculture for wood production and biomass; Forest ecology; Wood quality and technology; Economics and statistical surveys. The unit also undertakes experimentation, publication, consultancy and technical assistance for poplar growers, and training for both Italian and foreign technicians. The web-pages of the unit provide access to: the FAO International Poplar Commission (IPC) directory of poplar and willow experts; the FAO-IPC registry of poplar cultivars; the EUFORGEN database of Populus nigra clones; a bibliographic database related to the cultivation of poplars and willows.
