DescriptionCIFOR is part of the (Spanish) National Institute for Agriculture and Food Research and Technology (INIA). INIA is an autonomous organisation of the Science and Technology Ministry. The CIFOR is functionally organized into three Departments: Forest ecology and genetics; Silviculture and forest systems management; Forestry products. There are also a number of other units, laboratories and thematic networks specialised in the study of the forest environment, biotechnology and forest tree breeding mediterranean and intensive silviculture, and the characterisation and improvement of major forest products. Research priorities include: (1) Ecological characterisation of the forestry environment with regard to sustainable production, climatic change, modifications in use and conservation, and global warming; (2) Inventory, analysis and conservation of the genetic diversity of forest systems and selection, characterisation and propagation of reproductive forest material; (3) Development of models for the optimisation of sustainable forest management and multi-use of forest systems, taking into account the species and landscape diversity, and the economic and social value of the forest. Contribution of the forest activities to the rural development; (4) Protection against fire: characterisation of fuels, modelling and prediction of fire and preventive forestry. Natural regeneration after forest fires; (5) New technologies to be applied to the forestry sector: remote sensing, geographic information systems, biotechnology, and restoration and implementation of forestry systems; (6) Characterisation and improvement of raw materials originating in with forest (wood, cork, resin) and of their by-products; (7) Design and optimisation of techniques for obtaining wood pulp, agricultural and recovery material crops; (8) Food safety and quality: wood-wine relationships, cork-wine relationships and paper and wooden containers in contact with food.
