CreatorRed Temática GLOBIMED
DescriptionThe GLOBIMED network aims to contribute to addressing the problem of biodiversity in Mediterranean forest environments, conceiving biodiversity in a broad sense (not only as a variety of species, but also of processes and interactions). The network aims to coordinate the research activities of different scientific groups from througout Spain. GLOBIMED is structured around 5 thematic areas: (1) Biodiversity and factors regulating it; (2) Ecophysiology and functional ecology; (3) Regeneration of biodiversity; (4) Demography and genetics; (5) Integration and mathematical models. Other specific aims include: Unification of information and centralisation of network activities in a single database; Exchange of students and scientists among groups in the network in order to provide training in complementary scientific fields; Laying the basis for nationally and internationally coordinated projects (like the EU 6th Framework Programme) through joint discussions and pilot projects; Implementation of orientations of international committees and organisations involved in global change and biodiversity (IGBP, SCOPE, European Platform for Biodiversity, among others), with special emphasis on the setting up of a Spanish network for long-term ecological research (LTER); Preparation of an extensive and thematically organised mailing list of scientists, managers and leaders of institutions involved in the management of Mediterranean forests; Dissemination to key sectors outside the academic sphere, which do not usually consult specialised academic journals; Preparation of a comprehensive scientific publication at an intermediate level and aimed at a broad readership.
