DescriptionThe Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) and other surveys make up a national forestry information system. The NFI is part of the "Swiss Forest Monitoring" Program along with the Long-Term Forest Ecosystems Research (LWF), the Sanasilva Inventory (SSI), and the Forest Insect and Disease Survey (FIDS). The NFI is intended to record the current state and the changes of the Swiss forest in all its functions. It should be possible to give statistically reliable results for Switzerland, larger cantons and regions. The first survey (LFI1) took place from 1983-85, the second survey followed in 1993-95. The third NFI started in 2004 and will be completed in 2007. In this survey more attention will be paid to forest-like landscapes. The third NFI is being carried out by the Land Resource Assessment research unit of WSL (Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research). Key tables of results for the whole of Switzerland and for cantons are available from the webpages.
