Forest Map of Europe

Data Source: EFI EUROFOREST Portal
TitleForest Map of Europe
CreatorEuropean Forest Institute (EFI)
DescriptionThe main aim of producing the forest map of Europe was to utilise most effectively both Earth Observation data and forest statistical information. The procedure applies a calibration method to produce comprehensive and complete European maps on forest (and within the forest class the sub-classes coniferous and broadleaved) and non-forest/water at 1 x 1 kilometre resolution. Both the forest map (images) and the actual map databases can be downloaded. The databases are available in .BIL-format, packed to .ZIP-files. Information about the methods used can be found in the following reports: (1) Schuck, A. et al. 2002. Compilation of a calibrated European forest map derived from NOAA-AVHRR data. European Forest Institute. EFI Internal Report 13, 44p.; and (2) Päivinen, R. et al. 2001. Combining Earth Observation Data and Forest Statistics. EFI Research Report 14. 101p. These reports can be downloaded from the EFI website <>.
