Database on Forest Disturbances in Europe (DFDE)

Data Source: EFI EUROFOREST Portal
TitleDatabase on Forest Disturbances in Europe (DFDE)
CreatorEuropean Forest Institute (EFI)
DescriptionThe DFDE database aims at providing historic information about disturbances in the forests of Europe. In this context disturbance is defined rather broadly, namely as the occurrence of an event that causes unforeseen loss of living forest biomass or events that decrease the value or potential value of the wood or forest stand. The majority of disturbances is caused by natural agents, but other human induced impacts like sanitation fellings due to air pollution are also taken into account. Furthermore information about measures to reduce the impact of disturbances, mostly insect pests, were listed , like chemical or biological treatments. The information in this database was collected by means of a literature review, both from scientific papers as well as from grey literature. Each reference to a disturbance event is put in a single record, containing information on year of occurrence, exact date, country, region, district, disturbance type, tree species affected, volume, area, number, percentage, literature reference, underbark/overbark and other comments. Users must register to use DFDE.
