DescriptionConForest was a Project Centre of the European Forest Institute (EFI) and addressed the question of conversion of pure secondary Norway spruce forests on sites naturally dominated by broadleaves. The project centre is no longer active, but the web-site is still available (as of September 2011). The main objective of ConForest was to investigate the outcomes of change in forest management towards improved and increased forest structures, providing ecology-oriented site-adapted management scenarios. It focused on: analysis of ecological and economic effects of pure coniferous stands under various treatments as compared to broad-leaved mixed stands; and analysis of ecological and economic consequences during a conversion. This was achieved through the 10 working groups within, whose areas of research were: 1. Collection and Presentation of Inventory Data; 2. Inventory Methods; 3. Conversion Techniques; 4. Stand Structure and Dynamics; 5. Soil and Water; 6. Biodiversity; 7. Carbon Cycling and Sequestration; 8. Risk; 9. Managerial Economics; 10. Environmental Economics. The first phase started in December 2000 and the second phase started in January 2004. ConForest was co-ordinated by the Institute of Forest Growth at the Albert-Ludwigs-University, Freiburg, Germany.
